Skiing from Geneva: the resorts you can reach in a day, journeys and lift passes

"Skiing an hour from Geneva" is one of the most oversold promises in the region. The resorts you can really reach in a day, realistic journey times, the bus to Chamonix, the Magic Pass, equipment hire, and the days when you are better off staying in town.

Skiing from Geneva: the resorts you can reach in a day, journeys and lift passes

Geneva is not at the foot of the slopes, but it is close enough for a day's skiing. The nuance matters: "an hour away" almost always means a smooth drive, with no queue at the border, no full car park and no line at the hire shop.

Here are the resorts within reach of Geneva, with journey times we stand by, ways to get there without a car, what is known about lift passes for 2026-2027 and what is not, and the days to avoid at all costs.

Which resorts can you do in a day?

The times below are planning ranges by car from Geneva, excluding exceptional jams. They vary with your starting point, the border crossing and the car park you choose.

DestinationIndicative journeyWho it suits
Les Brasses45 min to 1 hr 10a short outing, families
Les Gets1 hr 10 to 1 hr 40the big Portes du Soleil area
Morzine1 hr 15 to 1 hr 45the same, village side
Flaine1 hr 15 to 1 hr 45the Grand Massif, altitude
Chamonix1 hr 15 to 1 hr 45high mountains, Mont Blanc
La Clusaz1 hr 20 to 1 hr 50the Aravis village
Les Diablerets1 hr 45 to 2 hr 30in Switzerland, included in the Magic Pass
Verbier2 hr to 2 hr 45in Switzerland, better for a stay than a day

The key point: Les Brasses is the only resort really suited to a short outing. Les Gets, Morzine, Flaine, Chamonix and La Clusaz need a full day. Verbier and Les Diablerets are possible, but the drive eats into a good part of your skiing time.

The Salève, the mountain overlooking Geneva, sometimes appears in these lists. It is not a ski resort in the sense of a ski area: it is a viewpoint reached by cable car, presented in our page on the Salève.

How do you get there without a car?

Chamonix by bus, the best option

FlixBus and transfer companies link Geneva Airport and the Place Dorcière bus station to Chamonix. The direct journey takes 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr, for €8 to €30 depending on how far ahead you book. Allow 2 hr to 3 hr 30 min door to door, with waiting and the jams at the Mont Blanc Tunnel.

Two limits. Departures are often concentrated between 10am and 6:30pm in the published timetables: a flight landing in the evening does not guarantee a connection. And the €8 headline price assumes booking early.

The train, slower

There is no direct Geneva to Chamonix train. Routes go via Annemasse and Saint-Gervais, or via Martigny and Vallorcine. One aggregator shows an average journey of 2 hr 24 min, another source 3 to 4 hours with connections. With skis, every change weighs.

For Verbier, the train runs to Le Châble, then the lift takes over. For Les Brasses, Flaine, Les Gets, Morzine and La Clusaz, the road or an organised transfer remain simpler.

Transfers and coaches from the airport

Geneva Airport confirms coaches to nearby French towns and seasonal services to the resorts, but no single official table brings together the 2026-2027 operators, timetables and fares. Book your transfer at the same time as your flight, especially on Saturdays. How the airport works is explained in from Geneva Airport to the city centre.

A day's skiing without driving: excursions from Geneva to Chamonix and nearby resorts include transport, sometimes the lift pass. Our partner's Geneva page brings together the available trips.

How much do lift passes cost?

This is the weak point of the available information: none of the resorts on our list had published, in our sources, a verifiable 2026-2027 day pass. Prices are often dynamic, different online and at the ticket office, and distinct between local and area-wide passes. We do not copy those of a past season.

Only one figure is published: the Magic Pass, a season pass valid at more than 100 destinations in Switzerland, France and Italy, including Les Brasses and Les Diablerets. It costs 576 CHF for an adult and 314 CHF for a child in 2026-2027, valid until 30 April 2027.

It is not a day pass: it becomes worthwhile after several outings in the season, at member resorts. For a single day, buy the resort's own pass, online if it uses variable pricing.

Hiring equipment in Geneva or at the resort?

Hiring in Geneva lets you pick up the equipment the day before and leave straight from the hotel, with no queue at the foot of the slopes. Hiring at the resort lets you match skis and boots to the day's snow and swap equipment if there is a problem.

No reliable price comparison between the two is published, and the difference can be cancelled out by transporting the equipment, the deposit or a late return. Check above all the currency, the insurance, the return time and any fees if you return the equipment in the other country.

By car: vignette, equipment and car parks

  • The Swiss vignette at 40 CHF is compulsory on Swiss motorways, for Verbier or Les Diablerets. Towards the French resorts you leave Switzerland quickly, but check your route.
  • French tolls depend on the route.
  • Winter tyres and chains: rules vary by country and road, and equipment may be required in French mountain areas during the regulated period. Keep chains in the boot.
  • Resort car parks fill up early on Saturdays, Sundays and during the February holidays, and our sources publish neither their prices nor their capacity.
  • Car hire may charge separately for driving into France, chains or winter tyres: read the contract.

If you are staying in Geneva without a car, forget about hiring one for a single day: the bus or an organised excursion often works out cheaper, parking included. Crossing the border, papers and vignette, is explained in how to get to Geneva.

Which days should you avoid?

Saturdays in the February holidays combine everything: jams leaving Geneva, full car parks, queues at the lifts. Sunday afternoons mix day skiers and people returning from a week away. Our field rule, in the absence of published statistics:

  • prefer a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday outside school holidays;
  • arrive before the lifts open;
  • avoid driving back between 4pm and 7pm on busy weekends;
  • check the snow report, the lifts open and the car park that very morning.

A resort billed as "an hour away" can take two on a snowy Saturday. That is the main difference between a guide and a brochure, and we would rather tell you before you set off.

Can you ski during Watches and Wonders?

Technically yes, as the fair runs from 5 to 11 April 2027. But April is the end of the season: only the high-altitude resorts, Flaine, Chamonix or Verbier, offer good chances of snow, to be checked against the day's report. Les Brasses, lower down, is a gamble.

Never plan the fair and skiing on the same day: traffic around Palexpo and traffic to the valleys add up, and you risk losing one of the two. Take a separate day. The whole fair set-up is in our Watches and Wonders 2027 guide.

Where should you stay: Geneva or the resort?

For one or two days of skiing within a city break, stay in Geneva and leave early: you keep the city in the evening and the Geneva Transport Card for your journeys to the bus station or the airport. The districts are compared in where to stay in Geneva.

For three days of skiing or more, stay at the resort: you save two to four hours of driving a day, and you are on the slopes when the lifts open.

For several days on the slopes, staying at the resort saves the round trips. Les Gets, at the heart of the Portes du Soleil, is one of the closest resorts to Geneva for a proper ski holiday.

And when there is no snow?

Geneva has other winter pleasures: the sauna and fondue at the Bains des Pâquis, the Christmas market from late November to 24 December, free museums on grey days. The city in winter, with what closes and what opens, is described in when to go to Geneva.

And for a mountain outing without skiing, Annecy and its lake make a day trip, as explained in from Geneva to Annecy. The rest of the programme is in things to do in Geneva.

A Geneva base for a city and snow weekend: near Cornavin station, you are a few minutes from the airport and the bus station where buses leave for the resorts.
