From Geneva to Lausanne: train, coach, car or boat, the right choice and the right price

Lausanne is the easiest day trip from Geneva: a direct train almost every fifteen minutes. What costs you is buying at the wrong time and forgetting that Lausanne is a city on a slope. Real journey times, prices, the boat and a one-day programme.

From Geneva to Lausanne: train, coach, car or boat, the right choice and the right price

Between Geneva and Lausanne, the question is not really "how" but "at what price and with what margin". The direct train beats everything else: it links the two stations in 39 to 52 minutes, with up to 110 daily departures published in one direction.

This page compares the options in door-to-door time, which timetables never give, then explains how to pay less, what to do from the airport, and how to organise your day in Lausanne.

The train: how long, and how often?

The average journey time shown is 47 minutes. The fastest InterCity and InterRegio trains do the journey in 39 to 46 minutes; regional trains, which stop at the stations of La Côte, take closer to 51 to 52 minutes.

At normal times, a departure every 15 to 30 minutes makes booking unnecessary for an ordinary journey: seats are not reserved on Swiss domestic trains. The train leaves from Genève-Cornavin, right in the centre; in Lausanne, it arrives below the city, which matters for what comes next.

How can you pay less?

By buying early. Discounted tickets start at around €6 to €10 with resellers, when the standard fare is around €23 to €28. Their availability and restrictions vary by departure: a discounted ticket often ties you to a specific train.

No source publishes comparable data on the same trains on the same dates, so we will not announce a fixed gap between booking early and buying at the last minute. Your hotel's Geneva Transport Card only covers the canton of Geneva, not the journey to Lausanne (what Geneva passes cover).

From Geneva airport, how do you get to Lausanne?

Genève-Aéroport station has direct trains to Lausanne, in 49 to 52 minutes. But telling a traveller who is landing "52 minutes" is misleading: between disembarking, luggage, the walk to the station, waiting and the last kilometre, allow 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 45 min door to door.

A published timetable shows direct departures from about 6:10am to 9:14pm. Later on, there are routes with a change, of up to 3 hr 47 min. Sources also contradict each other on frequency: about 11 trains a day for one, one every 15 to 20 minutes for the other, probably depending on what is counted.

For a late flight, check the last direct train on the day. Arriving at the airport and getting into Geneva are detailed in from the airport to the city centre.

Coach and car: in which cases?

The coach. FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus link Geneva airport and Lausanne in 50 minutes on the road, for 8 to 14 CHF, three to five times a day depending on the platform. It is the cheapest option, but the most fragile: traffic jams on the way into Geneva lengthen the journey, stops may be far from the stations, and the last departure is not clearly published.

The car. The A1 links the two cities in about an hour of driving. Door to door, allow 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 45 min off-peak with a booked parking space, and 2 to 3 hr on a busy day. The motorway vignette at 40 CHF is compulsory. Parking, in both cities, can cost more than the train ticket.

The car makes sense for a group, equipment or poorly served accommodation. For a simple day in Lausanne, it wastes time. If you are already arriving by car, leave it in a Geneva park and ride.

What about the boat on Lake Geneva?

There is no regular lake service that works as a transfer between the two cities, the way a train or coach does. CGN does, however, sail between Geneva and Lausanne in nearly 3 hours, with the Belle Époque fleet from mid-April to mid-October.

It is a cruise, to be enjoyed for its own sake: out by boat and back by train makes a lovely summer day. Timetables, fares and stops are in boat trips on Lake Geneva.

What should you do in Lausanne in a day?

The point maps hide: Lausanne is a city on a slope. The station is halfway up, the Cité and the cathedral above, Ouchy and the lake below. Walk up to the cathedral in 15 to 25 minutes, or take the metro, and walk down to Ouchy, 20 to 30 minutes from the station.

Our realistic programme, over 4 to 6 hours, meal included:

  • The cathedral and the Cité, 45 to 60 minutes, checking for services that disrupt visits;
  • the walk down to Ouchy, 60 to 90 minutes on foot or by metro;
  • Ouchy and the Olympic Museum, by the lake, 90 to 120 minutes;
  • lunch and downtime, 60 to 90 minutes.

Our sources do not publish a stable calendar of museum closures: check the closing day before you set off. Lausanne combines poorly with Montreux on the same day if you want to see both properly. Other day trips are compared in day trips from Geneva.

What does Watches and Wonders change on this route?

No rail supplement specific to the fair is published: SBB applies no surcharge. The real change concerns Geneva's hotels, which are full, pushing some visitors to stay in Lausanne and commute.

It is a valid strategy, provided you allow for packed trains at opening and closing times, and the connection to Palexpo. A fair ticket guarantees no seat. Access to the fair is covered in our Watches and Wonders guide, hotels in where to stay during the fair.

Stay in Lausanne during Watches and Wonders, less than an hour by train from Geneva, when Geneva's hotels are full. This link opens Lausanne hotels for the fair dates; check the distance to the station.

Lausanne or Geneva: which city should be your base?

For a stay centred on Geneva with a day in Lausanne, stay in Geneva: the trip is easy, and the Geneva hotels' transport card covers all your journeys within the canton. The reverse makes sense if your programme leans towards Montreux, Lavaux or the Gruyère region, which are closer to Lausanne.

The calculation changes during Geneva's big weeks, when prices double: Lausanne then becomes a serious fallback base, less than an hour away by train. Keep in mind the last evening train, and the fact that discounted tickets go quickly on those days.

The blind spots of timetables

  • Door-to-door time is never published. The 39 to 52 minutes exclude getting to the station, waiting and the climb to the Cité.
  • The minimum price is hard to reproduce. A €6 ticket is an advance offer in limited numbers.
  • The last departure is not a single time. Last direct train, last useful departure and last theoretical route are three different times.
  • The coach depends on traffic. Its 50 minutes assume no traffic jams and no transfer.
