Hotels in Geneva: centre, station, airport and budget, where to look
Geneva has a reputation for being expensive, and it is. But reasonable rooms can be found if you know where to look: around the station, towards the airport, across the border. Prices recorded in 2026, the trap of the word "centre", the charges that get added, and the advantage only a Geneva hotel gives you.

Search for "hotel Geneva" and you land on hundreds of addresses, half of which are not in Geneva in the sense you mean. The word covers the city, the conurbation, the airport or French towns with "Porte de Genève" in their name.
This page helps you look in the right place for your needs: the station, the centre, the airport, or the smallest budget. For the district-by-district reading, with the drawbacks of each, see where to stay in Geneva district by district.
How much does a hotel in Geneva cost?
No official body publishes a price grid. So we checked Google Hotels ourselves for the lowest price of a double room for two adults at places in each price range, on two dates: an ordinary weekend in late November and the first public day of Watches and Wonders.
| Type of place | Example checked | Late November 2026 | Fair, 9 April 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youth hostel, double room | Geneva Hostel | 86 CHF | 84 CHF |
| Budget, near the airport | ibis Genève Aéroport | 100 CHF | 245 CHF |
| 4-star near the airport | Mövenpick Hotel Geneva | 119 CHF | 184 CHF |
| Chain 4-star in Les Pâquis | Novotel Genève Centre | 131 CHF | Fully booked |
| Opposite Cornavin station | Hôtel Cornavin | 132 CHF | 275 CHF |
| 4-star between station and lake | Hôtel Bristol | 289 CHF | 531 CHF |
Prices checked on 23 October 2026, in Swiss francs like every place on this page. "Fully booked" means no rooms were offered any more. Outside events, our research puts a 3-star at around 130 to 220 CHF a night and a 4-star at around 200 to 350 CHF.

This is the best anchor point for a stay without a car: the station, the airport train in 6 to 7 minutes, trams 14, 15 and 18, and the Old Town 15 to 20 minutes on foot. A budget chain is listed there 200 metres from the station.
The trade-off is noise: traffic, quays, taxis, transient guests. The immediate surroundings of the station and the main roads are less restful than an address three streets further on, towards Les Grottes or Pâquis. Ask for a room at the back.
Pâquis, between the station and the lake, offers the same practical advantage with more restaurants and the Bains des Pâquis at the end of the street, in a more contrasted district that is lively in the evening.

A "city-centre" hotel: what does the word mean?
Almost nothing, and that is the first trap. A 4-star chain hotel on Rue de Zurich, in Pâquis, presents itself as "centre"; the same listing puts it 399 metres from Cornavin, 0.6 km from the centre by one reference and 1.1 km by another. All three figures are true, measured from different points.
Before booking, ask three questions: centre of what, measured from where, on foot or as the crow flies? A "centre" address can be in Servette, 25 minutes' walk from the Rues-Basses, or near the airport. Locate it on our map of Geneva.
If you really want the historic centre and the harbour on foot, aim for Quai du Mont-Blanc, the Rues-Basses or the Old Town, which cost more. The top end along the lake is compared in Geneva's palace and grand hotels.

A hotel near the airport
This is where you find the lowest headline rates in the conurbation, and it is the right choice for a very early flight or a day at Palexpo. Some hotels are 0.6 to 1.1 km from the airport station, with the centre about fifteen minutes away.
It is not a stay "in Geneva": a road and retail environment, lifeless evenings, unpleasant walks back late at night. The journey to the centre is covered in from Geneva Airport to the city centre.

Early flight, a fair at Palexpo or a small budget? Hotels around the airport show the lowest headline rates in the conurbation. Check the shuttle or the nearest stop.

In this order: the airport, Vernier, Cointrin and Grand-Saconnex; then Servette and Charmilles when the centre is full; then neighbouring France. Each step brings the room price down and the journey time up, and you need to compare both.
Hostels exist, with dorm beds at around 35 to 70 CHF outside events according to our research, and a reduced tourist tax at campsites, at 2.50 CHF.
One argument weighs heavily in favour of Geneva accommodation, even out of the centre: the free Geneva Transport Card, covering trams, buses, trains within the canton and Mouettes for your whole stay. An address in Servette with the card often beats a cheaper French address without it. The maths is in which pass for visiting Geneva.

Is staying on the French side a good deal?

Sometimes. Annemasse, near the station, is the best French base without a car, 22 minutes from Cornavin by Léman Express. Ferney-Voltaire and Prévessin are close to the airport, Palexpo and CERN. Archamps, below the Salève, is a hotel and retail hub that lives by car.
Prices there are lower: a budget hotel in Archamps was recorded at €63 to €85 off-peak, with a local tax of €0.90 per person per night at the property consulted. But breakfast cost €9.90 per adult, nearly €60 for two adults over three nights.
Add cross-border tickets or the car, the lack of a Geneva Transport Card and the evening journey back, and the saving melts fast. Finally, beware of names: "Porte de Genève" describes a regional position, not an address within walking distance of the Old Town. Annecy itself, an hour away by bus, can serve as a base for a two-city stay (from Geneva to Annecy).
Small budget and no car? Annemasse, 22 minutes from Cornavin by Léman Express, is the most practical French base. Include the train tickets in your comparison.
See hotels in Annemasse →Partner link: booking through this link supports the site at no extra cost to you. What charges are added to the price shown?
- The tourist tax: 4.25 CHF per person per night in 2026, often charged separately. Pages that have not been updated still show CHF 3.75.
- Breakfast, rarely included in the base rate.
- Parking, expensive in the centre and not always guaranteed. The alternatives are in parking in Geneva.
- The card pre-authorisation or deposit, with no common Geneva scale.
- The extra-person supplement and the difference between prepaid and cancellable rates.
No uniform Geneva practice sets the amount of deposits: only the property's confirmation counts.
Arriving late at the hotel
Never assume reception is open after 10pm. Chain hotels often have a kiosk or a code, small properties close their front desk, and apartments work with key boxes or appointments. There is no common latest check-in time in Geneva.
Ask for the procedure in writing before your arrival day, especially if your flight lands after the last train. The night options from the airport are in our airport page.
When should you book?
Outside events, a few weeks are enough. During Watches and Wonders, from 5 to 11 April 2027, everything changes: professionals book the whole week months ahead, and prices roughly double. The month-by-month timeline is in where to stay during Watches and Wonders, and the fair itself in our Watches and Wonders 2027 guide.
Other weeks tighten the market: big congresses at Palexpo, international meetings, summer weekends, December. The seasons are compared in when to go to Geneva.
For Watches and Wonders week, 5 to 11 April 2027, or any major fair date, book with free cancellation as soon as your dates are fixed. The cheap rooms go first.
See hotels for the fair dates →Or the public weekend, from 9 April 2027 →Partner link: booking through this link supports the site at no extra cost to you.Our method in five steps
- First fix the district according to your plans, with our guide to the districts.
- Compare the total price, tourist tax and breakfast included.
- Check the real distance to the station or to your meeting place, not the word "centre".
- Choose registered accommodation for the Geneva Transport Card.
- Take free cancellation: in Geneva, prices move with the congresses.
Once the room is booked, plan your arrival with how to get to Geneva, and your programme with things to do in Geneva or our weekend in Geneva. By car, think of the park and ride sites and the trams described in getting around Geneva.
