Day trips from Geneva: Lausanne, Montreux, Gruyères, Annecy, Chamonix, what fits into one day

Nine one-day destinations from Geneva, and one rule: one main destination, one indoor visit, one walk. Beyond that, the trip becomes a string of connections. What is easy, what is underestimated, and what organised excursions are worth.

Day trips from Geneva: Lausanne, Montreux, Gruyères, Annecy, Chamonix, what fits into one day

Geneva is an excellent base for exploring: Lake Geneva, Haute-Savoie and the Gruyère region are within reach by train or coach. But the journey times shown by operators lie by omission. They count the vehicle's journey, not getting to the station, waiting or climbing up to the old town.

The times below are door-to-door estimates that include those margins. They are not contractual, but they avoid the most common mistake: a three-town itinerary that lets you see none of them.

Which day trips really fit into one day?

DestinationDoor-to-door journeyMinimum time on siteFeasibility
Lausanne45 to 70 min each way4 to 6 hrvery easy
Yvoire1 hr to 1 hr 45 min3 to 5 hrvery doable in season
Montreux1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 45 min4 to 6 hreasy
Chillon1 hr 40 min to 2 hr 15 min2 to 3 hreasy with Montreux
Lavaux1 hr 15 min to 2 hr 30 min3 to 5 hrdoable, depends on the walking
Annecy1 hr 30 min to 2 hr 15 min4 to 6 hrdoable
Évian1 hr 30 min to 2 hr 30 min4 to 5 hrless simple than advertised
Gruyères2 hr 15 min to 3 hr3 to 5 hra long day
Chamonix2 to 3 hr5 to 7 hra very full day

The most robust is Lausanne; the most spectacular and the most fragile, Chamonix; the most underestimated in time, Gruyères. Even closer, the Salève fits into half a day, and so does CERN.

Lausanne: the risk-free day trip?

The direct train links Cornavin to Lausanne in 39 to 52 minutes, with a departure every 15 to 30 minutes. No booking to make, no connection to miss: it is the ideal outing on an uncertain day.

The trap is the slope. The station is halfway up, the cathedral and the Cité above, Ouchy and the Olympic Museum by the lake. Plan on the metro, and 4 to 6 hours on site. Journeys, prices and programme are in from Geneva to Lausanne.

Montreux, Chillon and Lavaux: how do you combine them?

Montreux is 1 hr 10 min to 1 hr 30 min by train, 1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 45 min door to door. The station is up the hill: the walk down to the quays takes 10 to 20 minutes, which matters when catching the train back. The quays and centre take 2 hr 30 min to 4 hours.

Chillon Castle is about 4 kilometres from central Montreux, 45 to 60 minutes on foot, or 15 to 30 minutes by bus or boat, waiting included. The visit inside takes 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr 30 min. Its spaces are narrow and get more crowded in summer than the brochures say.

Lavaux is not one place but a string of villages and vineyard paths: Cully, Lutry, Saint-Saphorin, Chexbres. The walking makes the day: 20 to 40 minutes from Saint-Saphorin to Rivaz, 1 hr to 1 hr 30 min from Rivaz to Cully, 45 to 75 minutes from Chexbres to Rivaz with some climbing.

Not all wine cellars are open every day, and a tasting needs booking. A wine landscape does not guarantee that an estate will welcome you when you pass by. In rain, heat or frost, the paths become hard going.

Montreux and Chillon fit together into 5 to 7 hours. Adding Lausanne on the same day means giving up on seeing one of the three properly.

Gruyères: why is it the most underestimated day trip?

Because the village is small, people think the visit is quick. By public transport, though, the journey takes 2 hr 15 min to 3 hr each way, with connections and a final walk; by car, 1 hr 40 min to 2 hr 15 min without traffic. The full day comes to 9 to 12 hours door to door.

On site: 2 to 3 hours for the village and the castle, 1 to 2 hours for a museum, 1 hour to 1 hr 30 min for La Maison du Gruyère or a food stop. Leaving after an hour gives the worst ratio between travel time and visiting time.

Our sources do not publish a reliable calendar of closures for the castle, La Maison du Gruyère and the museums: opening hours change between low season, Sundays and winter. It is the destination where an organised excursion makes the most sense, because it removes the connections.

Annecy and Chamonix: Haute-Savoie in a day

Annecy is 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr 15 min door to door by coach or car, parking included. The direct bus takes 50 to 56 minutes. The old town, the canals and the lakeside can be done on foot; Montrottier Castle and the Gorges du Fier need a vehicle. In summer and at weekends, traffic and the crowds on the quays eat into the day. It is all in from Geneva to Annecy.

Chamonix needs 2 to 3 hours each way and 5 to 7 hours on site for the Aiguille du Midi, the centre and a meal. The Aiguille closes in strong wind or snow, and a missed coach throws the whole programme off balance. The direct coach, the shuttle and the train are compared in from Geneva to Chamonix.

Yvoire and Évian: Lake Geneva on the French side

Yvoire is a short outing if the boats and connections line up: 1 hr to 1 hr 45 min door to door, by car or combining bus and boat. The village takes 2 to 3 hours, more with the garden and a meal. It quickly gets crowded in summer, and car parks and lunch restaurants cost more than you might think.

Évian needs 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr 30 min door to door, for 3 to 5 hours on site between the quays, the centre and the spring. From Lausanne, CGN crosses in 35 minutes for 44 CHF in second class.

Yvoire and Évian on the same day by boat? Possible in season, risky out of season: boats become scarce and a missed connection means a long wait. Never build the itinerary around a single boat with no way back. The lines and the boat season are in boat trips on Lake Geneva.

What are organised excursions from Geneva worth?

ExcursionPublished priceWhat is stated
Gruyères230 CHF adult, 152 CHF young personcoach, guided tour, village, chocolate tasting; departure at 8:15am from May to October
Chamonix and Mont Blanc215 CHF adult, 151 CHF young persondaily departure at 8:30am; Aiguille du Midi included or not, not specified
Annecy, Montrottier, Gorges du Fier95 CHF adult, 60 CHF childtransport, castle, gorges, one-hour boat trip, free time; on Sundays
Annecy, another brochure69 CHF adultpoorly described product
Private excursionfrom 655 CHF for 1 to 4 peopleadmissions not necessarily included

The brochures contradict each other: Gruyères also appears at 203 to 209 CHF in other documents, for another product or season. Before buying, identify the provider, the date and what is included: admissions, meals, cable car.

Our reading: the organised excursion is worth its price for Gruyères and Chamonix, where it removes difficult connections. For Lausanne, Montreux or Annecy, the train or bus alone do just as well for much less. The Annecy option at 95 CHF is a good example of a programme impossible to do independently without a car.

What should you drop when the day overflows?

The rule that works: one main destination, one indoor visit, one walk. When the programme swells, cut in this order:

  1. the third distant site, for example Lausanne, Montreux and Gruyères on the same day;
  2. activities that depend on rare departures: boat, tasting, cable car;
  3. secondary indoor visits when the day already includes a castle or a museum;
  4. the long sit-down lunch, especially in Annecy, Montreux or Chamonix in high season;
  5. the most distant destination, Gruyères or Chamonix, if you leave late.

Depending on the weather and the season

  • Rain: Lausanne, Chillon, the museums of Montreux. Avoid Lavaux, Yvoire and the boat; Annecy remains viable thanks to its old town.
  • Heat: leave early for Annecy, Yvoire and Lavaux, and avoid the vineyard walks at midday.
  • Winter: short days, Lavaux and Yvoire lose their flexibility; the Gruyères excursion switches to a 9:30am departure and the winter schedule. The rest of the season is in Geneva in winter and skiing from Geneva.
  • High-season weekend: Annecy, Chamonix, Montreux and Yvoire are packed; advertised road times become fanciful.

How do you fit one into a stay in Geneva?

A day trip takes a whole day: it has its place from three days on site. Our three-day itinerary sets one aside, and the weekend in Geneva suggests a single outlying area to choose.

Your hotel's Geneva Transport Card covers the journey to the station and within the canton, not beyond the cantonal border (what the passes cover). The most favourable seasons are discussed in when to go to Geneva.

A base near Cornavin for an early start: the station serves Lausanne, Montreux and the Léman Express to Haute-Savoie. This link opens Geneva hotels for the next weekend.

Two cities rather than one day trip. To see Montreux, Lavaux and Chillon without rushing, a night in Lausanne shortens every journey to the east of the lake. This link opens Lausanne hotels for the next weekend.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Geneva?
Lausanne for simplicity: a direct train every 15 to 30 minutes, 39 to 52 minutes on board. Chamonix for the spectacle, if the high-altitude forecast is good. Montreux and Chillon for a compromise between lake and castle.
Can you visit Gruyères as a day trip from Geneva?
Yes, but it is a long day: 2 hr 15 min to 3 hr each way by public transport, 9 to 12 hours door to door. The organised excursion, at 230 CHF for an adult, removes the connections.
How much does an organised excursion from Geneva cost?
From 69 CHF to 95 CHF for Annecy, 215 CHF for Chamonix and 230 CHF for Gruyères, per adult. A private excursion starts at 655 CHF for 1 to 4 people.
Can you do Lausanne and Montreux on the same day?
On paper, yes; in practice, you will only skim one of them. Lausanne needs 4 to 6 hours, Montreux and Chillon 5 to 7 hours. Better to choose, or spend a night in Lausanne.
What can you do around Geneva when it rains?
Lausanne and its museums, Chillon Castle, Montreux, or Annecy's old town. Avoid Lavaux, Yvoire and the boats, which lose all their appeal in the rain.
