How much does a trip to Geneva cost? Real budget by profile, and how to pay less

Geneva is expensive, that is a fact. But it gives part of the bill back: free transport for hotel guests, free museums, drinking water everywhere, the lake for two francs. The prices we found, four typical budgets, what inflates the bill and the savings that work.

How much does a trip to Geneva cost? Real budget by profile, and how to pay less

Geneva is among the most expensive cities in Europe, and visitors feel it from the first coffee. Accommodation, restaurants and alcohol weigh the most. What people mention less is that the city gives part of the bill back to those who know where to look.

Here are the prices we found in Swiss francs, four daily budgets depending on how you travel, what makes the bill spiral and the savings that really work. One franc is worth roughly one euro, but the rate varies: do not confuse them when paying.

How much do things cost in Geneva?

ExpenseTypical priceGood to know
Coffee at the counter3 to 5 CHFmore by the lake or in a hotel
Beer, 25 to 33 cl5 to 8 CHF8 to 12 CHF in touristy places
Lunchtime dish of the day20 to 30 CHFoften without a drink
Simple restaurant meal25 to 45 CHFstarter, dessert and drink push it up
More comfortable meal50 to 90 CHFexcluding fine dining
Night in a hostel or simple room50 to 110 CHFdepending on the date and district
Budget hotel120 to 220 CHFhigher during trade fairs
Three-star hotel130 to 220 CHF250 to 500 CHF during Watches and Wonders
Upmarket hotelCHF 350 to over 800luxury palaces go well beyond
Tram or bus ticket3 CHFfree for guests staying in the canton
Day pass10 CHF8 CHF from 9am

These are orders of magnitude gathered between 2024 and 2026, not an official price list. Sources sometimes disagree slightly: 20 to 30 CHF for the dish of the day here, 20 to 35 CHF on our restaurants page. Do not turn any of these figures into "the average price in Geneva".

What daily budget should you plan?

ProfilePer day, accommodation includedWhat it assumes
Budget90 to 180 CHFhostel or accommodation on the French side, supermarket, picnics, few paid activities
Reasonable comfort220 to 400 CHFbudget or three-star hotel, lunch in a restaurant, simple dinner
Watch enthusiast300 to 600 CHFcentral accommodation, restaurants, Palexpo and watch-related activities
Top endCHF 600 to over 1,000luxury hotel, fine dining, taxis

Excluding flights. Accommodation makes up most of the gap between profiles, so that is where to act first. Details of districts and prices are in where to stay in Geneva and hotels by budget.

The biggest item is the night. Comparing Geneva hotels on your exact dates, tourist tax and breakfast included, often saves more than all the other tips put together. This link opens hotels for the coming weekend.

Why is Geneva so expensive?

High Swiss wages, steep rents, an international clientele, strong business demand and luxury positioning: restaurants and hotels pass on the cost of staff, premises and imported products. Trade fairs do the rest, doubling room prices in some weeks.

The city is not expensive everywhere in the same way. The lakeside, the station and the surroundings of the big hotels cost much more than Plainpalais, Eaux-Vives or Carouge, as explained in where to eat without breaking the bank.

What offsets the bill?

Free transport for hotel guests

This is the most powerful correction. Anyone staying at a participating Geneva establishment receives the Geneva Transport Card, digital, personal and non-transferable, which makes buses, trams, trains and the Mouettes free on the canton's unireso network, except Céligny, for the whole stay.

Accommodation in France does not qualify. Download the card before you set off, and do not rely on a screenshot or someone else's card if you are checked. Everything is in Geneva Transport Card and City Pass.

Free museums

The permanent collections of the municipal museums are free, and their temporary exhibitions are free on the first Sunday of the month. The Museum of Art and History works on a pay-what-you-wish basis. The list is in Geneva's museums and free things to do in Geneva.

Tap water and the lake

Geneva's water is drinkable: a water bottle saves you buying bottles all day, and in restaurants, ask for "une carafe d'eau du robinet". By the lake, the Bains des Pâquis cost 2 CHF and the Eaux-Vives beach is free (swimming in Geneva).

The Geneva City Pass

It advertises 60 free or discounted activities over 24, 48 or 72 hours. With so many entries already free, it only pays off if your programme strings together paid activities: do the maths before buying it.

Which tips really work?

Eat at lunchtime

The dish of the day, at 20 to 30 CHF without a drink, is the most rational option, against 25 to 45 CHF for a simple à la carte meal. In the evening, set menus, extras and drinks push the bill up. Make lunch your main meal, and dinner a light one.

Picnics

Bread, cheese, fruit and water bought at the supermarket let you aim for 10 to 20 CHF per person per day for a simple meal. The quays and parks lend themselves to it; keep a sheltered option in case of rain.

Stay on the French side

Annemasse, Gaillard, Ferney-Voltaire or Saint-Julien-en-Genevois offer cheaper nights, especially during trade fairs. But you lose the free transport card, and two people paying for cross-border tickets every day quickly eat into the saving. The full calculation is in staying on the French side.

Use transport passes

Without a guest card, the day pass at 10 CHF pays off from four journeys, and at weekends a pass for two people costs 10 CHF on Saturday or Sunday. Avoid taxis when the journey is covered: lines and fares are in getting around Geneva.

Tight budget, with the full calculation. Annemasse is 22 minutes from Cornavin on the Léman Express, with rooms often cheaper than in Geneva. This link opens Annemasse hotels for the coming weekend; add the train tickets to your comparison.

Which days are cheapest?

The calendar saves money too. On the first Sunday of the month, the temporary exhibitions of the municipal museums become free, so does the Ariana Museum, and the Plainpalais flea market opens: a cultural day for almost nothing, at the price of the crowds.

At weekends, without a guest card, the tpg pass for two people at 10 CHF replaces two day passes. Outside trade fairs, rooms return to their usual prices: the same night costs up to half as much as in April, as the ranges in when to go to Geneva show.

How much does a typical weekend for two cost?

Let us do the maths for a couple, two nights in a central three-star hotel outside fair periods, using our ranges. This is our estimate, not a published package:

ItemCalculationFor two
Hotel, two nights2 × 130 to 220 CHF260 to 440 CHF
Tourist tax2 people × 2 nights × 4.25 CHF17 CHF
Lunches4 dishes of the day at 20 to 30 CHF80 to 120 CHF
Simple dinners4 meals at 25 to 45 CHF100 to 180 CHF
Coffees and a beer each8 coffees and 2 beers34 to 56 CHF
Visitscathedral towers at 7 CHF, Patek Philippe Museum at 10 CHF, Bains des Pâquis at 2 CHF38 CHF
TransportGeneva Transport Card provided by the hotel0 CHF

Total: about 530 to 850 CHF for two, or 130 to 210 CHF per person per day, excluding breakfast, drinks at the restaurant and shopping. This is the "reasonable comfort" profile, pulled down by free transport and museums without tickets.

The same formula during Watches and Wonders changes scale: the room rises to 250 to 500 CHF a night, and the weekend almost doubles. Conversely, two nights in a hostel and picnics bring the bill down towards the budget profile.

Pay in francs or in euros?

In francs, almost always. Shops that accept euros apply their own rate and give change in francs, and a card terminal offering to charge in euros adds its own margin. A small cash reserve is enough for the unexpected: details are in Swiss francs, cards and tipping.

How much does a visit during Watches and Wonders cost?

Isolate four items: entry, the night, meals and transport to Palexpo. In 2026, the public ticket cost 70 CHF on Saturday or Sunday, 50 CHF on Monday, 120 CHF for the weekend and 160 CHF for all three days, online only.

The night changes scale: a four-star hotel rises to 400 to 800 CHF that week. Restaurants near Palexpo fill up and taxis become scarce. Strategies for finding a room are in where to stay during Watches and Wonders, the fair itself in our guide.

Which charges inflate the bill?

  • The tourist tax, 4.25 CHF per person per night, often charged separately.
  • Breakfast, rarely included in the base rate, and parking, expensive in the centre.
  • Paying in euros: a terminal offering to pay in euros often applies a less favourable rate. Pay in francs (money in Geneva).
  • A fair ticket bought too late: capacity is limited per date, with no sales on site.
  • Misunderstood freebies: a free beach includes neither locker nor sunlounger, and a free museum may have a paid temporary exhibition.
  • The classic scams of a tourist city: fake inspectors, fake collections, unofficial taxis. Check the amount before confirming.

The weeks when everything costs more are detailed in when to go to Geneva. For unashamed luxury, the rates of the grand hotels are in Geneva's luxury hotels.
